New 2016 Ford Focus

2016 Ford Focus Overview

New/Notable:
  • New SYNC3 infotainment system available
  • Optional 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine available
  • Available as a sedan or hatchback
The 2016 Ford Focus continues to build on its large update from a year ago, adding new technology options, two new exterior colors, and a standard rearview camera to the mix for the new model year.

Last year’s updates helped to bring the Focus more closely in line with the Focus sold abroad; hence the addition of the  1.0-liter EcoBoost engine and new styling, which changed the look of the front of the Focus to more closely match the rest of the cars in the Ford stable. It gives the Focus the look of a larger Fiesta in many regards. The taillights were also narrowed which gives the back more of a horizontal footprint, though the actual dimensions are unchanged. LED headlights and taillights are optional. The SE EcoBoost appearance pack adds new 16-inch alloy wheels for 2016 as well.

The Focus is still offered in two forms: sedan or hatchback. The big difference between the two, besides looks of course, is cargo room. The sedan offers a 13.2 cubic foot trunk, while the hatchback has 23.3 cubic feet of space behind the second row, which can expand to 43.9 cubic feet with the 60/40-split seat (standard on hatch models) folded down.

The new EcoBoost engine gives the Focus two engine options. The base engine is a familiar 160-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder that is mated to a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The EcoBoost mill is a 123-hp, turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder that comes with a standard six-speed manual. For 2016, a six-speed SelectShift automatic is now available on EcoBoost equipped models as well which should help more of them sell. Expect models with the base engine and the automatic transmission to get 27/40 mpg city/highway. Model with the EcoBoost engine expectedly return the highest fuel economy, 30/42 mpg with the manual and 28/40 mpg with the newly available automatic.

Interior updates once again build off of the work done in 2015, which added physical controls to replace the awkward touch-buttons of the previous generation. For 2016, the Focus adds the new SYNC3 system as an option, which comes with an eight-inch touchscreen, improve voice recognition, AppLink, and 911 Assist. Standard features include an auxiliary audio input, air conditioning, power windows and locks, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. Joining MyFordTouch on the options list are navigation, heated steering wheel, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and Bluetooth connectivity.

The 2015 Focus also gets a boost in safety technology, with a rear view camera now standard and a lane keeping system optional. Also standard are the federally mandated antilock brakes/electronic stability control, and six airbags.
